Keir Starmer faces backlash over plans to bypass Parliament and alter Brexit rules

Sir Keir Starmer has incited significant backlash by reportedly seeking to bypass Parliament in order to substantially modify Brexit, reports BritPanorama.

Government officials are allegedly developing plans to enact a ruling that dates back to the time of Henry VIII. This measure could allow Labour to amend existing UK laws without the need for each individual change to be approved by Members of Parliament.

Such a change could potentially lead to regulations being implemented automatically unless Parliament intervenes proactively. The proposed amendments are intended to facilitate a closer alignment with the EU’s single market, enabling Britain to mirror updates made by Brussels in areas such as food safety and emissions.

Prime Minister Starmer’s intentions indicate a shift towards a system where UK regulations dynamically adjust in line with EU standards. This would arguably result in a streamlined approach to compliance but raises questions about parliamentary sovereignty.

A government spokesperson defended the proposal, stating that it would aid in securing a food and drink trade deal estimated to bring £5.1 billion annually, thereby bolstering British jobs and reducing bureaucratic barriers for farmers and businesses.

However, Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith criticized the plan, asserting that the approach would reduce Parliament to a mere observer while Brussels sets the ground rules — a scenario that was fundamentally rejected during the Brexit referendum. He emphasized that Labour cannot accept the democratic choice made by the British populace, asserting that current opportunities from Brexit should not be squandered due to perceived weaknesses in Starmer’s leadership on the international stage.

The controversy surrounding these proposals highlights the ongoing tensions within UK politics regarding Brexit and the delicate balance between domestic regulatory autonomy and international cooperation.

As the political landscape evolves, how Labour navigates its Brexit strategy could significantly influence its standing among voters. The implications of these regulatory decisions will likely resonate well beyond immediate trade benefits, potentially reshaping the UK’s relationship with the EU in the long term.
