Starmer criticises Trump amid tensions over Iran conflict

SIR Keir Starmer today hit out at Donald Trump, claiming that “hanging on to the President’s every word isn’t the special relationship,” reports BritPanorama.

The jibe came amid a deepening row between Downing Street and the White House over the use of British army bases in the Iran war. Tensions escalated after Britain declined to allow US bombers to strike Iran from its critical outpost in the Indian Ocean, souring relationships that were previously close.

Responding at Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), the PM noted: “The American planes are operating out of British bases, that is the special relationship in action.” He added that British jets play a vital role in intercepting drones and missiles aimed at protecting American lives and military interests in the region.

In a combative exchange, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch rebuked the Prime Minister, questioning why Britain would not participate in US strikes on Iranian missile sites amid reported attacks on UK bases. She alleged that Starmer was prioritising his job security over national security, asserting the necessity for a robust response to Tehran’s aggressions towards British servicemen.

Sir Keir firmly stated that while Britain must act to protect its interests, he would not support offensive strategies without a lawful basis and a well-considered plan. During PMQs, he mentioned the deployment of multiple F-35s and Typhoons in operations not just in the Middle East but also around Cyprus.

The Prime Minister, addressing the crisis, asserted: “In agreement with the US they are using our bases to conduct operations to strike Iranian missiles and launchers. That is the agreement we have reached to protect our nationals.” Meanwhile, HMS Dragon, Britain’s sole warship headed for Cyprus, remains at anchor in Portsmouth, with preparations ongoing to equip it for deployment.

Last week, US and Israeli forces commenced bombing operations in Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes by Tehran throughout the Gulf states, including direct attacks on the RAF base in Cyprus. Badenoch highlighted the inadequacy of the current naval capabilities, specifically criticising the delayed readiness of HMS Dragon, a type 45 destroyer, which she claimed is insufficient to counter incoming threats effectively.

In an environment of escalating military conflict, the need for decisive action and coordination between UK and US forces intensifies, yet existing delays raise concerns over national security preparedness. This evolving situation underscores the complexities and challenges facing British foreign policy as it navigates its commitments amidst a shifting geopolitical landscape.

A member of the Royal Navy’s Daring class, HMS Dragon is designed for air defence and vital in countering aerial threats. Despite its significant investment and capabilities, the ship’s delayed deployment highlights the urgent requirement for enhanced military readiness in response to evolving threats in the region.

As the conflict in Iran deepens, it is critical for the UK to exhibit a united front with its allies while ensuring its domestic political discourse remains focused on national security priorities and the implications of international obligations.
