Keir Starmer apologises to Wes Streeting over leadership coup allegations
Sir Keir Starmer has issued an apology to Health Secretary Wes Streeting after the latter was accused of plotting a leadership coup, following a contentious briefing incident, reports BritPanorama.
The Prime Minister engaged in a telephone conversation with Streeting amid concerns about the fallout from the accusations. The episode has been likened to an episode of a reality TV show due to its sensational nature.
Streeting has publicly denounced the allegations, describing the “toxic culture” surrounding the No. 10 operation and calling for the dismissal of those responsible for the “juvenile” briefing against him. He stated, “It’s totally self-defeating briefing, not least because it’s not true, and I don’t understand how anyone thinks it’s helpful to the Prime Minister either.”
He further characterised this incident as the worst attack on a “faithful” party member since another recent controversy within the Labour ranks. In a bid to address the issue, Starmer will initiate a leak inquiry to determine who disseminated the damaging claims.
Streeting’s remarks highlight a growing concern within the party regarding internal conflicts and communication strategies following a period of falling poll ratings, with Labour trailing behind Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. Calls have been made for Starmer to consider the future of his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, in light of the negative atmosphere surrounding his leadership.
Labour party chair Anna Turley noted that Starmer is actively investigating the source of these attacks, asserting that this behaviour is not reflective of his leadership style. “He is going to investigate and we’ll see what happens as a consequence of that,” she stated, emphasising that the Prime Minister had not sanctioned the briefing and was committed to eliminating such practices from his administration.
Turley added, “He was not aware of this briefing… He’s going to take action in this to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” This incident amplifies the challenges facing Starmer, especially as the party strives to reconcile differences and regain public trust ahead of upcoming elections.
