Rowling accused the government of “fighting to remove our daughters’ rights to the privacy and safety of single-sex bathrooms and changing rooms.” Her comments highlight ongoing tensions surrounding gender identity and women’s rights in the UK.
The controversy intensified after Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson described trans guidance by the Equality and Human Rights Commission as “trans-exclusive” in a confidential submission to the High Court. Phillipson argued that draft guidelines preserving single-sex spaces would obstruct women from taking their young sons into swimming pool changing rooms.
This issue has gained traction following a legal challenge initiated by the activist group Good Law Project, known for its pro-trans stance. Meanwhile, Shadow Minister for Equalities Claire Coutinho stated, “Government lawyers working under Bridget Phillipson’s instruction are trying to rewrite the Supreme Court judgment that sex means biological sex.” She added that there seems to be no intention to safeguard women’s rights to single-sex areas.
