Jeremy Corbyn is set to make a notable appearance in a pantomime, taking on the role of the Wizard of Oz-lington in “Wicked Witches — A Popular Panto” at the Pleasance Theatre in London, reports BritPanorama.
The former Labour leader, aged 76, will perform in his local Islington North constituency. This comes in the wake of a public dispute with his ally Zarah Sultana, which has raised concerns regarding the future of the newly formed Your Party.
The internal dynamics of the party are further complicated by recent revelations indicating that there will be a singular leadership role, to be determined by a member vote in March. The Electoral Commission mandates that political parties must operate under a single leader.
Corbyn will appear alongside several performers including drag artist Crayola the Queen as the wicked witch, Eleanor Burke as the Good Witch, and Rosanna Suppa as Dorothy.
Ellie Simpson, Head of Theatre at Pleasance London, remarked, “Jeremy’s as much a part of Islington as the Yellow Brick Road is of Oz – so who better to play the Wizard of Oz-lington?” She added that his cameo brings a local touch to what is the theatre’s first panto in over two decades, marking the beginning of its 30th anniversary celebrations.
This unique engagement reflects Corbyn’s enduring connection to his constituency and highlights the evolving landscape of British political theatre.
The decision to cast Corbyn in such a role underscores a cultural intersection between politics and community engagement, suggesting that political figures continue to play multifaceted roles within their localities.
