Green Party conference descends into chaos over voting software failure
The Green Party’s online spring conference encountered significant turmoil as the voting software crashed, leading to confusion and conflict among members regarding a motion stating that “Zionism is racism,” reports BritPanorama.
Members expressed their frustrations in the chat, imploring others to refrain from using capital letters during the technical breakdown. As chaos unfolded, motions of no confidence against the chair were proposed by some attendees.
Former Green Party deputy leader Shahrar Ali commented on Twitter, describing the conference voting as “an absolute shambles,” highlighting a lack of secure voting mechanisms and suggesting a breakdown in order. The contentious motion aimed to designate the Green Party as an “anti-Zionist party,” sparking divisions between traditional members and more radical elements within the group.
Many members were enraged when time expired before the vote could be finalised. Although the party later confirmed that the server issues were resolved, tensions remained high.
Further raising concerns about antisemitism within the party, activists were reported to have made inflammatory remarks via WhatsApp, including derogatory comments about Jewish individuals. Allegations also surfaced that members of a faction known as Greens for Palestine propagated conspiracies surrounding incidents involving Jewish charities.
Zack Polanski, the Green Party leader, who is Jewish, faces criticism as his family expresses fears about their future in Britain, should he attain a significant leadership role. This backdrop of discord is compounded by unfavourable commentary from opposition politicians, including Tory MP Matt Vickers and Labour MP David Taylor, who labelled the internal conflicts as indicative of a party in disarray.
As the Green Party grapples with these internal divisions and external criticisms, its ability to maintain cohesion on key issues remains uncertain, potentially affecting its influence in UK politics.
Amidst ongoing discourse about the role of political parties in addressing sensitive topics, the Green Party’s current predicament illustrates the complexities of modern political activism and the challenges of maintaining unity in the face of divisive issues.
