China threatens UK with ‘consequences’ over delay in mega-embassy approval

China has issued a stern warning to the UK government regarding further delays to its proposed London “super embassy,” threatening “consequences” for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer if approval is not granted soon, reports BritPanorama.

The Chinese government condemned the UK for “acting in bad faith and without integrity” after ministers postponed a ruling on the embassy site until December, marking the second such delay in recent months.

Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, expressed “grave concern and strong dissatisfaction” over the decision and insisted that the UK fulfill its commitments, stating that failure to do so would result in significant repercussions.

The embassy’s plans have sparked alarm within the UK, as security officials warn that its location adjacent to vital communications infrastructure could transform it into an espionage hub, with potential implications for both governmental and financial institutions across London.

The proposed site at Royal Mint Court, near the Tower of London, aims to establish what would become Europe’s largest embassy. However, the project has met resistance from officials, who took it from the jurisdiction of Tower Hamlets Council following its rejection in 2022.

Critics suggest that the government’s delays are politically motivated, indicating that Labour is reluctant to provoke Beijing amid rising concerns over Chinese influence and surveillance activities in the UK.

This diplomatic clash unfolds as the UK grapples with increasing tensions surrounding allegations of espionage targeting British institutions. Recent developments include the abrupt withdrawal by the Crown Prosecution Service of a high-profile case against two British men accused of spying for China, which has deepened scrutiny regarding China’s operations within the UK.

MI5 chief Sir Ken McCallum disclosed that state actors from China pose a daily threat, urging vigilance on Beijing’s influence efforts. Furthermore, Dominic Cummings, a former advisor to Boris Johnson, disclosed that intelligence officials had alerted him to China’s intent to establish a spy center beneath the proposed embassy.

In response, Shadow Housing Secretary James Cleverly has called for comprehensive access to the embassy proposal’s plans to ensure transparency and security, urging the government to adopt a tougher stance akin to measures taken by Ireland and Australia regarding similar proposals from Russia.

The Liberal Democrats have criticized the government’s indecision, with foreign affairs spokesman Calum Miller asserting that it is time to reject the embassy proposal, highlighting the need to convey to China that the UK will no longer acquiesce to their espionage tactics.
