Calls for Rachel Reeves to reconsider fuel duty rise amid soaring diesel prices
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is under increasing pressure to revoke the planned 5p fuel duty rise as diesel prices have surged by 23 per cent since the start of the conflict in Iran, reports BritPanorama.
The average price of diesel at UK forecourts has reached 176.7p per litre, prompting calls from various political factions, including the Conservatives and Reform UK, to halt the increase. In contrast, petrol prices have risen by 13 per cent during the same period, settling at 149.4p per litre.
Global oil prices have climbed to nearly £89 per barrel due to disruptions caused by Iran’s control over tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for oil transportation. This escalation has led to UK drivers incurring an additional £330 million in costs for petrol and diesel since hostilities began, according to the RAC.
Fuel duty rates have remained unchanged since 2011, largely thanks to advocacy efforts aimed at keeping prices down. Previous temporary reductions were introduced in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but these cuts are set to be phased out in September.
Reeves has indicated that an update on pricing will be forthcoming in the next few weeks, with experts warning of potential increases in the costs of other goods due to ongoing shipping disruptions. Analysts also project that inflation may rise to four per cent in the third quarter of this year, driven by heightened energy prices.
In related discussions, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer acknowledged that the decision regarding whether Britain should pursue additional oil and gas drilling lies with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that he has no authority to grant further licenses for fossil fuel exploration in the North Sea, as such decisions rest with his Cabinet colleague.
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch criticized Sunak for not taking a more decisive stance, claiming he is overly reliant on Miliband’s direction. She stated, “He is so weak, he’s the first person to be pushed around by the Energy Secretary.”
