Andy Burnham poised to challenge Keir Starmer as by-election rumors swirl

Gwynne’s potential resignation opens the door for Burnham in leadership challenge

Speculation surrounding a leadership challenge within the Labour Party has intensified, with reports indicating that MP Andrew Gwynne may resign as early as today, paving the way for Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to return to Westminster, reports BritPanorama.

Gwynne is believed to have negotiated a deal with Burnham, who is eager to re-enter Parliament amid ongoing discussions about a leadership coup. This potential resignation could trigger a by-election in the Gorton and Denton constituency, further complicating the political landscape.

The independent MP lost the Labour whip in February 2024 following the emergence of offensive WhatsApp messages, which have tainted his standing within the party. Discussions are reportedly underway between Gwynne and Burnham, with rebel MP Jim McMahon acting as a key intermediary in facilitating this potential transition.

Gwynne, a former supporter of Keir Starmer, is often linked to the “Manchester Mafia,” a group of Labour MPs advocating for Burnham’s elevation to the leadership, informally dubbed the “Etihad Coup” after the home stadium of Manchester City FC. Such manoeuvres only add to Starmer’s challenges, as he faces plummeting poll ratings and increasing scrutiny as one of the least popular Prime Ministers in recent history.

The possibility of a leadership challenge appears more imminent should Gwynne proceed with his resignation, raising questions about Starmer’s capacity to maintain control over the party as pressure mounts for a political reset.

As the Labour Party navigates this critical juncture, the internal dynamics reveal deeper fractures that may reshape its future strategy and leadership structure. The evolving situation warrants careful observation, especially amid broader electoral prospects.
