New plans for domestic abuse support unveiled in the UK
Abuse victims will receive specialist NHS help under new measures designed to combat violence against women and girls, reports BritPanorama.
The proposals aim to enhance support for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence across England, establishing a new GP-led referral system to end the postcode lottery for assistance.
Under a scheme named Steps to Safety, victims will be expedited from their GP to specialized services, with healthcare staff being trained to identify abuse at an earlier stage.
Children who have experienced sexual abuse will also receive trauma-informed care within a single framework, facilitated by an expanded Child House model, which is backed by funding of up to £50 million.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the critical role of the NHS in supporting and treating victims, stating: “These changes will put victims first, making sure they have specialist care and reliable support when they need it most.”
The reforms form part of a larger strategy intended to halve violence against women and girls over the next decade, with further details expected to be published on Thursday.
In a related development, police have been directed to employ counter-terror style technology to better target rapists and stalkers. Ministers are looking to replicate the Met Police’s V100 scheme, a data analytics tool that has significantly increased arrest rates.
This initiative assists police in identifying, monitoring, and disrupting offenders who present the highest risk to public safety. For instance, the system was instrumental in apprehending an individual responsible for attacking eight women within four days, one of whom was raped at knifepoint.
Labour has described these measures as potentially the most comprehensive effort to tackle violence against women and girls in British history.
