Ireland is set to bask in sunshine for the next ten days, with above average temperatures for May, according to Met Éireann.

Deputy Head Forecaster Elizabeth Coleman said the west will see temperatures of up to 24 degrees Celsius over the course of today and possibly tomorrow.

“We’ll continue that way really through the week, so lovely sunny weather across the country,” she said.

“Temperatures dropping slightly back to maybe late teens, early 20s, as we go towards the end of the week and the weekend, but lots of sunshine for most people across the country, so get out there and enjoy it while you can,” she added.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne, Ms Coleman said there will be some potentially heavy showers, mostly in the southern half of the country and towards the west today and tomorrow, but these will be isolated.

She attributed the fine weather to high pressure, which has been established over the country for the past week.

“It’s going to continue for the next week as well. We’ll just have slight incursions of those low-pressure systems that are bringing those showers up over the southern part for the next few days.

“But it looks in the forecast for the next ten days that we will have sunny high pressure with those temperatures late teens to early 20s.”

Ms Coleman said temperatures will likely increase towards the end of the month and forecasters will be looking to see if they break any records for this time of year.

She described soil moisture deficits as “running very low”, but asked that gardeners conserve their water to a degree as there is not much rain forecast.

“I know that a lot of people will head towards coastal areas or along our waterways for the weekend, so we just ask people to think about safety on the water and think about safety in the sun as they get out and enjoy the weather,” she said.
