Varying exercise routine may significantly reduce mortality risk, new study finds

An international research team has uncovered that engaging in a diverse range of physical activities could significantly reduce mortality risk, revealing a 19% decrease in chances of death from all causes. The study analysed data from over 110,000 participants across two extensive cohort studies conducted over 30 years, published in the journal BMJ Medicine, reports BritPanorama.

Results indicated that participants who incorporated various forms of exercise—such as walking, swimming, and yoga—into their routines experienced greater longevity than those who adhered to a single type of physical activity. The authors suggest that engaging in multiple activities may be more beneficial than extending the duration of a single exercise.

Dr. James Voos, chief of orthopedics at University Hospitals in Ohio, commented, “A 19% decrease is a big deal. When you look at the literature, anything that has that significant of a response should encourage us to take a look at our habits.” This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Han Han, one of the study’s lead authors, who noted that the findings add a new dimension to existing exercise recommendations.

The current guidelines suggest adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly, along with muscle-strengthening activities. However, experts indicate the importance of variety to mitigate overuse injuries and enhance long-term adherence to exercise regimes.

Voos emphasized the need for diversity in physical activities: “Your body needs different ranges of motion, strength and stability, and cross-training lets your body see all of those different movements each week.” The premise of holistic engagement in various exercises is particularly crucial for children, as it promotes healthier sports participation patterns and greater success later in life.

Culminating the discussion, while the study underscores the benefits of exercise variety, experts advise that even simple exercises can contribute to overall health. Questions remain regarding specific recommendations for the number of different exercises to perform weekly, but the consensus is clear: variety is key to a sustainable and effective fitness routine.

As research continues to highlight the importance of varied physical activity, it becomes increasingly essential for individuals to reconsider their exercise habits—adapting as needed to optimize health and longevity.
