In her new book “Mattering: The Secret to a Life of Deep Connection and Purpose,” journalist Jennifer Breheny Wallace emphasizes that a sense of mattering is essential for human flourishing. Wallace articulates that during times of year when it is easy to retreat into solitude, individuals are encouraged to seek social interaction and community engagement.

Wallace explains that feeling valued by others is fundamental for emotional health. When people perceive that they matter, they tend to thrive; conversely, feelings of insignificance can lead to withdrawal, substance use, or even aggression. This can manifest in societal issues such as road rage and increasing political partisanship. Thus, addressing how individuals can foster a sense of mattering has significant implications for both personal and community well-being.

She identifies five key components that contribute to this feeling of mattering: recognition, where individuals feel appreciated for who they are; reliance, where others depend on them; importance, based on the significance of their connections; attunement, involving meaningful understanding; and ego extension, the sense that others are invested in their lives.

The notion that modern society has shifted towards transactional relationships—where social needs are increasingly outsourced—is a recurring theme. Wallace argues that while outsourcing tasks like childcare or household help meets immediate needs, it diminishes the emotional connections that underpin community resilience and personal satisfaction.

She suggests that taking small steps to help others can enhance one’s sense of purpose, acting as a form of social fuel rather than a depleting task. By recognizing the value of even modest contributions to others, individuals can invigorate their sense of agency and fulfillment.

Wallace further discusses how caregivers, particularly parents, might experience burnout when giving without acknowledgment of their own needs. Prioritizing self-care is not selfish; rather, it can enable individuals to support others effectively. Understanding that personal and relational well-being are interlinked can reshape how caregivers approach their responsibilities.

As these insights permeate discussions around mental health and community engagement, the exploration of mattering emerges as a significant theme deserving of further attention.
