Multistate salmonella outbreak linked to raw oysters sickens over 60

A multistate outbreak of salmonella infections likely linked to raw oysters has sickened more than 60 people across 22 states, according to a health advisory from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports BritPanorama.

Health officials are currently working to identify the source of these contaminated raw oysters, as indicated in the advisory issued on December 23. The CDC’s guidance underscores the importance of vigilance regarding seafood consumption, particularly during social gatherings.

The symptoms of salmonella infection typically manifest within six hours to several days post-exposure, presenting as diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting. In most healthy adults, these symptoms last from four to seven days and generally resolve without the need for specific treatments.

Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health expert, explained that salmonella infections are most commonly associated with undercooked poultry and eggs, though they can also be found in seafood, including oysters. The invisible bacteria can infiltrate food without altering its smell or taste, leaving consumers unaware of potential health risks.

“Cooking oysters thoroughly significantly diminishes the risk of infection. However, eating them raw carries inherent risks, even from regulated sources,” Wen stated, emphasizing the need for heightened caution in light of recent outbreak reports.

Those most vulnerable to severe salmonella illness include the elderly, infants, pregnant individuals, and anyone with compromised immune systems. In these populations, the infection can escalate beyond gastrointestinal distress, potentially leading to more severe health complications.

The CDC continues to monitor the situation closely while providing updated recommendations for consumers. As the holiday season approaches, people are advised to reflect on the safety of seafood offerings at events and ensure that proper cooking techniques are employed.

Maintaining informed and cautious dietary practices can mitigate the risks associated with this outbreak, ensuring healthier celebrations.
