Maryland health officials report increase in mumps cases

Health officials in Maryland have issued an alert following an increase in reported mumps cases, with 26 confirmed as of February 19, including 19 confirmed and seven probable infections, reports BritPanorama.

The situation is not isolated, as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noted that, by late February, a total of 34 cases had been documented across 11 jurisdictions nationwide.

Mumps, previously a routine childhood illness that saw a decline due to vaccination, is now resurfacing with increased frequency since 2006. The number of cases decreased dramatically from 152,209 in 1968 to just 231 in 2003, according to the CDC. However, concerns have risen as outbreaks continue to occur.

Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University, noted that mumps is primarily a viral infection impacting the salivary glands and spreads through respiratory droplets. She also pointed out that people can transmit the virus before they exhibit symptoms, particularly in close-contact settings such as schools and colleges.

Symptoms of mumps include swelling of one or both parotid glands, fever, and fatigue. While children often present with mild symptoms, adults are more likely to experience severe complications. Notably, unvaccinated individuals face a higher risk of both infection and serious health outcomes.

The MMR vaccine is effective but not foolproof; it can prevent 86% of mumps infections with two doses. Breakthrough cases can still arise, underscoring the importance of high vaccination rates in controlling outbreaks.

During an outbreak, public health authorities may recommend an additional dose of the MMR vaccine for at-risk individuals to strengthen immunity in response to increased exposure. This proactive measure aims to mitigate the spread and impact of mumps within communities.

Despite advances in vaccination, the persistence of mumps cases serves as a reminder of the ongoing necessity for public health vigilance and robust vaccination strategies.
