The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating potential links between Covid-19 vaccines and deaths reported “across multiple age groups,” according to a spokesperson, following a claim made by a senior official that vaccinations may have resulted in the deaths of 10 children, reports BritPanorama.
Andrew Nixon, a spokesperson for the US Department of Health and Human Services, confirmed that the FDA is conducting a “thorough investigation,” but did not elaborate on the data sources used or any possible changes to the approval or marketing of Covid vaccines. The focus of the inquiry stems from comments made by Dr. Vinay Prasad, the FDA’s chief medical and scientific officer.
In a memo last month, Prasad stated that “healthy young children who faced tremendously low risk of death were coerced” to receive the vaccine due to federal mandates, although he did not provide specifics regarding the reported 10 deaths. His analysis, according to Prasad, linked these fatalities to an initial evaluation that involved 96 cases, asserting that Covid has never posed a high lethality risk for children and its effects are similar to other respiratory pathogens.
Since their rollout in late 2020, over 700 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the US. The World Health Organization reports extensive safety monitoring, with rare serious side effects, such as anaphylaxis or myocarditis. Following these findings, the FDA intends to modify the vaccine approval process, increasing the evidence required to demonstrate vaccine safety and efficacy prior to market release.
Among the anticipated changes, stricter authorisation requirements for vaccines intended for pregnant women and an updated framework for annual flu vaccinations are on the table. Prasad emphasised the importance of safety reassessment and transparency in labelling.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a history of questioning vaccine efficacy and previously established the anti-vaccine group Children’s Health Defense. Under his leadership, funding for mRNA vaccine development has been reduced, and the advisory committee at the CDC has undergone personnel changes. Recent directives from Kennedy have led to controversial updates on the CDC’s website, perpetuating unfounded claims connecting vaccines to autism.
This evolving situation underscores a significant moment in public health discourse, as the FDA re-evaluates its stance on vaccine safety and efficacy while navigating political dynamics surrounding immunization policies.
