Dr. Ralph Abraham steps down as principal deputy director of CDC
Dr. Ralph Abraham is stepping down as principal deputy director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency said Monday, reports BritPanorama.
The agency stated that Abraham, who was sworn in on December 15, “chose to step down to address unforeseen family obligations.”
“It has been an honor to serve alongside the dedicated public health professionals at the CDC and to support the agency’s critical mission,” Abraham noted in a statement.
Prior to his role at the CDC, Abraham, as state surgeon general of Louisiana, ordered health officials to stop promoting mass vaccination.
Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the director of the National Institutes of Health, assumed the temporary role of acting director of the CDC earlier this month after Jim O’Neill departed the US Department of Health and Human Services.
With leadership changes unfolding at the CDC, ongoing developments are expected as the agency navigates public health challenges.
