Ukraine and Sweden are strengthening defence ties to bolster security in the Baltic region amid growing Russian threats. On 17 December 2025, the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov met with Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson to outline areas of collaboration aimed at enhancing Sweden’s military readiness. The partnership provides Sweden with access to Ukraine’s operational experience from high-intensity warfare, including countering hybrid operations, UAV deployment, electronic warfare, critical infrastructure strikes, and information attacks.

Practical experience strengthens Swedish forces

The exchange of real combat experience allows Swedish armed forces to base planning on tested operational solutions rather than solely on NATO scenario models. Integrating Ukrainian insights helps Sweden adapt its forces to modern threats more rapidly, improving weapons system effectiveness and resilience across air defence, aviation, and unmanned technologies.

This cooperation also enhances Sweden’s ability to prepare for asymmetric, hybrid, and cyber threats. Lessons drawn from Ukraine’s response to infrastructure and information attacks increase the robustness of Swedish institutions and critical infrastructure against potential Russian aggression.

Strategic impact on regional security

By supporting Ukraine, Sweden contributes to collective security in the Baltic and Northern Europe. The collaboration reduces regional vulnerability and strengthens both countries’ positions within the European security framework. Joint projects in high-tech defence production further bolster Sweden’s defence industry, encouraging innovation and expanding export potential within the EU.

Defence-industrial and economic opportunities

Shared work in air defence and discussion of Swedish defence platforms create strategic and commercial opportunities. Sweden benefits not only from improved national defence but also from contributing to a more resilient European security architecture, combining economic interests with enhanced regional protection.
