Defensive operation reshapes the battlefield in Kupiansk
Ukraine’s Defence Forces have successfully blocked Russian units inside the city of Kupiansk and cleared the entire north-western outskirts following a complex and prolonged operation. The actions mark a significant tactical shift in the area, although fighting is continuing in the central part of the city, where several isolated Russian pockets remain.
Ukrainian commanders say the information released reflects developments that can now be reported without compromising operational security, as visual evidence of the advance has already circulated publicly.
Rapid manoeuvre cuts off Russian garrison
The operation began with the establishment of a containment line designed to isolate the Russian garrison in Kupiansk from its main forces. Ukrainian units moved swiftly to secure Radkivka and Kindrashivka, while bringing Holubivka under effective fire control.
These manoeuvres disrupted Russian supply and reinforcement routes, creating the conditions for subsequent clearing operations on the city’s outskirts.
Clearing operations secure north-western Kupiansk
Following the encirclement phase, Ukrainian forces carried out systematic clearing operations in Moskalivka and the north-western districts of Kupiansk itself. This phase consolidated control over key terrain and further reduced Russian freedom of movement.
Military officials describe the advance as methodical rather than symbolic, aimed at ensuring lasting control rather than a temporary breakthrough.
Fighting continues in the city centre
Russian forces have withdrawn into several enclaves in central Kupiansk, where Ukrainian units are continuing search-and-destroy operations. The urban environment and remaining fortified positions mean the operation remains difficult and time-consuming.
Despite this, Ukrainian forces report steady progress and maintain pressure on the remaining Russian-held areas.
Coordinated effort across multiple security units
The operation is being conducted by a joint strike grouping centred on the 2nd National Guard Corps “Khartiia”, bringing together units from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, military intelligence, special operations forces, the Security Service’s Alpha unit, KORD and the Military Law Enforcement Service, alongside the Kupiansk tactical group.
This level of inter-agency coordination underscores the strategic importance of Kupiansk and highlights Ukraine’s growing capacity to conduct complex urban operations involving multiple branches.
