Ukraine strengthens position as a major honey exporter to the EU

Ukraine continues to solidify its status as a leading honey supplier to the European Union despite ongoing challenges from the full-scale war initiated by Russia. As of 2024, Ukraine exported 85,800 tonnes of honey, of which 71,000 tonnes — around 83% of the total — were directed to the EU, generating approximately $167 million in revenue. This places Ukrainian honey as the second largest supplier in Europe after China, with a 28% market share compared to China’s 37%, and ahead of Argentina’s 12%.

Organic beekeeping gains momentum in Ukraine

According to recent reporting by Agroportal, Ukraine now has around 50 certified organic apiaries operating under EU regulations (Regulations № 834/2007 and № 889/2008). Almost all these producers focus on export, offering products that include not only honey but also pollen, propolis, and beeswax. Organic honey benefits from a premium of up to 30% compared to conventional honey, responding to growing consumer demand in Europe for high-quality and environmentally friendly products.

Competitive edge and quality assurance for the EU market

Ukrainian honey benefits from rigorous European certification standards that ensure product quality and safety, including strict controls over moisture content, absence of antibiotics, and heavy metals. These safeguards strengthen trust in Ukrainian organic and natural honey among European consumers. Furthermore, efficient production and logistics make Ukrainian honey competitively priced, offering a reliable alternative to other suppliers while diversifying the EU’s honey supply sources.

Strategic value for EU food security and sustainability

The stable supply of honey from Ukraine enhances food security across Europe by reducing dependence on a single supplier and mitigating risks of price volatility. Organic honey imports also support the EU’s environmental goals by encouraging sustainable agricultural practices and preserving biodiversity through beekeeping. By fostering partnerships with Ukrainian producers, the EU reinforces ethical production standards and contributes to the resilience of the European agricultural market.

Ukraine’s role as a major honey exporter reflects a broader narrative of economic cooperation under difficult conditions, underscoring the mutual benefits of trade ties between Kyiv and Brussels. This cooperation not only sustains the livelihoods of Ukrainian beekeepers but also strengthens the stability and sustainability of the EU’s food supply.
