Former US defense engineer sentenced for attempt to aid Russian intelligence

A US court has sentenced former defense industry engineer John Murray Rowe Jr. to ten and a half years in prison for attempting to pass classified data on American fighter jet electronic warfare systems to Russian intelligence. His actions, including direct offers of cooperation with Moscow, were described by prosecutors as a severe breach that endangered the lives of US military personnel and undermined national security. According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the case underscores the seriousness of internal threats posed by espionage.

FBI undercover operation prevented intelligence leak

Rowe, who spent nearly four decades working at major US defense contractors, had access to both “secret” and “top secret” information. In 2020, believing he was in contact with a Russian operative, he began to voluntarily disclose sensitive details of electronic warfare systems vital for the protection of American aircraft. The FBI, conducting an undercover operation, was able to intervene and prevent the transfer of data. Officials stressed that the incident highlights the risks faced by employees with security clearances and the need to strengthen internal safeguards.

Espionage highlights Russia’s focus on human vulnerabilities

Investigators found that Rowe acted under the influence of personal grievances and maintained anti-American views, making him an easy target for foreign recruitment. Even after his arrest and guilty plea, he continued to share classified information during phone calls from prison. Experts noted that Russia seeks to exploit psychological weaknesses and personal vulnerabilities, not only through cyberattacks or military operations but also by infiltrating critical defense sectors. This case demonstrates the challenges of countering insider threats within highly secured environments.

US signals zero tolerance for betrayal

By handing down a prison term exceeding a decade, US authorities aimed to deliver a strong deterrent message. The Department of Justice and the FBI emphasized that espionage on behalf of a foreign power represents a direct threat to national defense and will be met with the harshest possible response. Officials added that such prosecutions are critical to protecting the integrity of the US defense system and to preventing further attempts by Russia to compromise American security through insider infiltration.
