The Forsytes adaptation lacks subtlety while introducing complex characters

The opening episode of 5’s adaptation of John Galsworthy’s works establishes a drama rich in character and conflict, featuring the wedding of Jolyon Forsyte to the widowed socialite Frances, reports BritPanorama.

Set in 1877, the series introduces its characters through a voiceover reminiscent of telenovelas, effectively situating the audience within the Forsyte family dynamics. The matriarch Ann takes the lead in detailing the relationships among the characters, signaling the tensions that will drive the narrative forward. The show’s blend of classic literary themes and contemporary soap opera elements is evident, aiming to captivate a modern viewership.

With a lavish production funded by America’s PBS, The Forsytes boasts high production values that enhance its storytelling. Characters are distinctively portrayed, with Danny Griffin as Jolyon giving a polished, almost fantastical performance enhanced by an immaculate appearance. In contrast, Joshua Orpin’s Soames embodies ambition and menace, marked by a villainous moustache to accentuate his character’s complexity.

The cast includes notable performances, with Eleanor Tomlinson portraying Louisa, a character from Jolyon’s past, whose revelation of twins adds layers to the storyline. Supporting roles from Jack Davenport and Susan Hampshire contribute depth, establishing a framework for the family rivalry that remains central to the plot.

While the adaptation has faced comparisons to major historical dramas like Downton Abbey and the American classic Dallas, it brings its own unique flair to the genre. The portrayal of familial ambition and scandal may resonate with audiences, although the nuances of character development remain under scrutiny. The series, designed for a broad international audience, prioritizes engagement over subtlety and may either draw viewers in or serve as a springboard to revisit Galsworthy’s original literary works, which earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The Forsytes continues next Monday at 9pm on 5
