Stranger Things season 5 blends nostalgia and thrills while embracing familiar charm

In a retro resurgence of the beloved series, *Stranger Things* has returned for its fifth and final season, with the story set in 1987 and the town of Hawkins under military occupation amid escalating threats from the Upside Down, reports BritPanorama.

The childhood gang, including Will (Noah Schnapp), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Mike (Finn Wolfhard), alongside Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), is still battling the primary monster, Vecna, while engaging in covert operations reminiscent of a resistance movement. Their communications are facilitated through pirate radio broadcasts by DJ Rockin’ Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) and her associate Steve “the hair” Harrington (Joe Keery).

As Eleven trains on a homemade assault course to prove her readiness for missions through the Upside Down, viewers encounter the ongoing tragedy of Max (Sadie Sink), who remains in a coma, prompting Lucas to visit the hospital regularly to play her favourite song, “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush, in an effort to awaken her.

The season opens with heightened tension as one of Hopper’s risky excursions is interrupted by an unexpected demogorgon invasion, setting the stage for further chaos. Since its debut in 2016, *Stranger Things* has become a cultural phenomenon, elevating the profile of its cast and reviving interest in brands like Dungeons & Dragons, along with iconic music from the 1980s.

The series retains its hallmark elements: nostalgia-laden references, balanced doses of charm, humour, and thrilling action. Instances of 80s pop culture permeate the storyline, including a nod to *Pretty in Pink* by Robin’s show and an homage to the film *Aliens* in the second episode. The characters’ endearing qualities enhance the narrative, offering quieter moments alongside the more terrifying encounters.

However, the aging of the young cast does present a challenge, with some characters looking older than their on-screen personas suggest, a consideration that could impact viewer immersion. Nevertheless, the nostalgic allure and fun of the show overshadow any narrative inconsistencies, leaving audiences eager for the future adventures promised in an upcoming spin-off series.

The first four episodes of *Stranger Things* season five are available now.
