Steve Diggle reflects on Buzzcocks' legacy and musical evolution since the 1970s

Buzzcocks: A legacy of music and resilience

In 1976, Steve Diggle responded to an advert seeking a bassist, which ultimately set into motion the formation of the iconic band Buzzcocks, reports BritPanorama. He met with Malcolm McLaren, who introduced him to the then-unknown Sex Pistols, sparking the early development of the band that would come to influence Manchester’s music scene profoundly.

Diggle’s initial meeting at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall would lead to a pivotal moment in music history. He recalls, “I told him I was forming my own group and I was meeting them here.” Fate intervened when Diggle and Pete Shelley, who had organised the gig, watched the Sex Pistols together and decided to start Buzzcocks the very next day, marking the genesis of their musical journey.

As they gained prominence, many now view Buzzcocks as the most influential band to emerge from Manchester. They supported the Sex Pistols at their iconic show on July 20, 1976, an event that would catalyse the local music scene and inspire various future artists, from Joy Division to Morrissey. Though Diggle chuckles at the exaggeration of attendance claims, the significance of that night remains clear.

In 1977, Buzzcocks spearheaded a movement by becoming the first band to self-release a record, their groundbreaking Spiral Scratch EP. The single “Boredom” showcased a new dimension of punk, blending melody and angst. This period also marked the departure of frontman Devoto, leading to Diggle’s shift to guitar, as they achieved a series of hits throughout the late 1970s, including the memorable “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve).”

The influence of Buzzcocks extended beyond their immediate success; their work inspired a generation of musicians. Diggle notes, “Morrissey took the non–gendered lyrics,” reflecting how the band’s creative output shaped the UK music landscape. While they dealt with the challenges of touring, the band’s relationship fracturing eventually led to their initial breakup in 1981.

After years apart and various solo projects, the original members reunited in 1989, capturing the energy of their past despite the passage of time. This led to a new era for Buzzcocks, culminating in iconic collaborations, including tours with Nirvana shortly before Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994. Their enduring appeal was showcased in their 2022 album, Sonics in the Soul, which received critical acclaim.

Following the death of Pete Shelley in 2018, Diggle contemplated the future of Buzzcocks. He ultimately resolved to continue the legacy, stating, “I’d have Pete back tomorrow if you could bring him back. But life evolves and changes.” This sense of evolution captures the essence of Buzzcocks, an act grounded in addressing contemporary issues.

Diggle’s latest album, Attitude Adjustment, ventures into themes such as homelessness, street violence, and conflict, reflecting a blend of personal and societal challenges over the decades. “It’s a social statement of a record,” he explains, inviting listeners to engage with both the music and its underlying messages.

In celebrating their 50-year journey, Diggle muses, “I’m just getting the feeling – the Buzzcocks were alright. We must have done something right somewhere.”

Attitude Adjustment is out now.
