Stephen Mangan reflects on mortality and personal connection in new series of Portrait Artist of the Year

Stephen Mangan Reflects on the Challenges of Portraits and Celebrity

Actor and presenter Stephen Mangan spoke candidly about the complexities of being portrayed in art, drawing parallels with recent reactions from prominent figures, including US President Donald Trump. Mangan, who hosts Sky’s popular Portrait Artist of the Year, noted the discomfort celebrities often feel when faced with artistic representations of themselves, reports BritPanorama.

Mangan recalled Trump’s recent outrage over his depiction on the cover of Time magazine, which he criticized for illustrating his features unfavorably. The cover accompanied a positive article regarding the President’s influence on a ceasefire in Gaza, but Trump took to Truth Social to describe the photograph as “super bad,” lamenting that it made his hair appear “disappeared” and gave the impression of a “floating crown.” This incident underscores the sensitive relationship between images and public figures.

The 57-year-old Mangan, known for his roles in both comedic and dramatic contexts, admits that he shares a mutual apprehension about being photographed. “A lot of actors don’t like having their photograph taken,” he revealed. “We don’t know what to do with ourselves.” While he finds models’ ability to pose admirable, he personally finds the experience daunting.

Currently, Mangan is engaged in filming the twelfth series of Portrait Artist of the Year, a show that captures the tension and creativity involved in portrait-making. During a recent video call from his north London home, Mangan expressed his deep respect for artists, finding joy in observing how portraits emerge from initial abstract lines and shapes.

Despite his status as a beloved TV figure, Mangan maintains humility about his background, sharing that he is the son of an Irish builder who worked hard to provide him with opportunities, including a challenging boarding school experience marred by bullying. Reflecting on his journey, Mangan emphasizes the importance of resilience in the face of adversity, a lesson shaped by the early loss of his mother to cancer.

Mangan’s career spans various genres, from comedy to drama, achieving fame in roles such as Guy Secretan in the sitcom Green Wing and the lead in the legal drama The Split. He has also hosted numerous game shows, including Have I Got News For You and the recent ITV series The Fortune Hotel, where contestants compete to conceal prize money from one another.

His ability to engage with diverse roles and genres reveals a commitment to exploring human vulnerability. “I don’t like stress,” he admitted, highlighting how he navigates the demands of fame and work. Mangan’s insights suggest that his personal experiences have endowed him with an empathetic understanding of the struggles faced by those he portrays.

Mangan continues to challenge the notion of a privileged public persona; he reflects on societal expectations and the realities of being in the public eye. Notably, he points out that his journey has imbued him with a keen awareness of life’s transience, which informs his performance choices.

“All art, whether it’s a painting or a stage play, is about people trying to express themselves,” Mangan stated, reinforcing his belief in the unreplaceable nature of human artistry amidst discussions of artificial intelligence potentially eclipsing human actors.

‘Portrait Artist of the Year’ continues on Wednesday at 8pm on Sky Arts
