Silent Witness returns for new series amid changing crime drama landscape

Silent Witness returns with new forensic mystery

The long-running crime drama Silent Witness has launched its 29th series with a gripping two-parter that marks a significant transition for the show’s characters. Newlyweds Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson find themselves in Birmingham, tasked with establishing a new forensic centre, reports BritPanorama.

As Nikki, portrayed by Emilia Fox, and Jack, played by David Caves, adjust to their new surroundings, they are quickly pulled into a murder investigation when a body is discovered in a stolen BMW. The driver had shot a takeaway worker before fleeing the scene.

The investigation leads the team to suspect professional hitman Gary Booth, who admits to having killed multiple people but claims a high-profile case involving missing fitness influencer Alice Hills is different. He allegedly reveals where her remains can be found, raising questions about the reliability of his confession and the involvement of other culprits.

Setting the series in Birmingham is part of the BBC’s broader strategy to diversify its programming across the UK. The city, underrepresented in British television, has seen a shift in focus from shows like Doctors and DI Ray, providing Silent Witness an opportunity for rejuvenation and the introduction of new characters.

The police team now includes seasoned officer DCI Jilly Bashir and enthusiastic DI Claire Ferris, played by Zitta Sattar and Mollie Winnard, respectively. The narrative tangentially hints at police corruption, suggesting further complications ahead.

Noteworthy is Fox’s commitment to her role after two decades, showcasing the show’s enduring appeal and ability to tackle contemporary issues while maintaining a steady approach to storytelling.

Silent Witness continues tomorrow at 9pm on BBC One
