Ranked: all 12 episodes of I'm Alan Partridge from worst to best

Steve Coogan’s iconic character Alan Partridge returns to the screen today in the new BBC series How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), as he navigates life back in Norwich after a stint in Saudi Arabia, reports BritPanorama.

Partridge has entertained audiences for over three decades, originating in the early 1990s on Radio 4’s On The Hour, and transitioning to film with Alpha Papa in 2013 and a recent Audible podcast titled From The Oasthouse.

His most acclaimed show, I’m Alan Partridge, aired from 1997 to 2002, encompassing two series and 12 episodes. Coogan stars alongside Felicity Montagu and Simon Greenall as Alan, a man facing uncertainty following his divorce and dismissal from the BBC, initially residing in a travel tavern and subsequently in a caravan.

Below is a countdown of his episodes, ranked from worst to best.

12) The Talented Mr Alan (Series 2, Episode 1)

Though series one is generally regarded as stronger, this lowest-ranked episode still offers ample laughs. Set five years after the first series, Alan reestablishes himself with his book Bouncing Back and Ukrainian girlfriend Sonja, having traded his Linton Travel Tavern for a caravan.

11) I Know What Alan Did Last Summer (S2, E5)

In this episode, Alan, dealing with tax issues, takes Sonja to Blickling Hall in Aylsham. He falsely claims it’s Bono’s home, but Sonja is not deceived by an impersonator. At an 8.1/10 rating on IMDB, it is the lowest-ranked episode, yet still maintains strong entertainment value.

10) The Colour of Alan (S2, E2)

Alan leads a sales conference for Dante’s Fires after a meeting with a representative. While the episode contains some cringe-inducing moments, such as Alan injuring himself during a speech, it remains rich in humor, featuring his antics at Choristers Country Club.

9) Towering Alan (S1, E6)

The series one finale showcases Alan hosting a vegetable competition and attending a funeral, which does not unfold smoothly due to staff frustrations. This episode is viewed as highly as a Beatles album like Rubber Soul.

8) Basic Alan (S1, E4)

This episode commences quietly, with Alan passing time out of boredom. However, highlights include his mischievous antics with hotel staff and introducing a new radio character, creating memorable scenes.

7) Never Say Alan Again (S2, E4)

Here, Alan attempts to host a Bond film marathon, but chaos ensues. Despite its nostalgic elements that reflect its early 2000s release, Alan’s enthusiasm for the subject, along with his more respectful demeanor towards Lynn, enhances the episode.

6) A Room With An Alan (S1, E1)

The inaugural episode effectively sets the tone, portraying Alan’s decline as he searches for a house amidst struggles securing a second series. This episode introduces his penchant for quirky radio segments.

5) Alan Attraction (S1, E2)

Forced to dismiss his staff, Alan’s Valentine’s Day date at an owl sanctuary with receptionist Jill goes awry, leading to comical mishaps during the evening.

4) Alan Wide Shut (S2, E6)

Concluding the series, this episode features Alan confronting poor book sales, with unsold copies being sent for pulping. A radio discussion spirals into chaos, showcasing his trademark insensitivity.

3) Brave Alan (S2, E3)

In perhaps the standout episode of the second series, Alan befriends a man named Dan, only to uncover the truth about Dan’s life, leading to humorous revelations at the Bravery Awards.

2) To Kill A Mocking Alan (S1, E5)

Ranking highest on IMDb, this episode follows Alan as he hosts a matinee for a superfan, leading to awkward situations that highlight his desperate attempts to maintain a fabricated image.

1) Watership Alan (S1, E3)

Partridge finds himself at odds with local farmers due to controversial comments made during his radio show. The episode peaks with a tense conversation with a representative from the Norfolk Farmers’ Union, encapsulating Alan’s character in all its flawed glory.

The new series of ‘How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge)’ airs on BBC1 at 9.30pm on October 3, and all episodes are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
