Narges Rashidi reflects on portraying Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in emotional drama ‘Prisoner 951’

Emotional portrayal of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s ordeal in ‘Prisoner 951’

The set of Prisoner 951 has been marked by tears, reflecting the intense emotional weight of the drama based on the six-year false imprisonment of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in Iran, reports BritPanorama.

Director Philippa Lowthorpe has described the project as deeply moving, recounting how it evokes empathy for those whose lives were affected by Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s story. “It’s a very emotional project. It just catches you unawares, and you think, these are these people’s lives,” she noted, reflecting on the connections formed with the Iranian individuals depicted in the series.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British dual citizen, was detained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in 2016 while visiting her parents with her young daughter, Gabriella. Accused of espionage—a charge she has consistently denied—she faced imprisonment and harsh conditions, including isolation and mock trials.

Her story, along with her courageous advocacy for other wrongfully detained individuals, forms a central theme of the drama. Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her husband, Richard, contributed to the development of the series, which draws elements from their upcoming book, A Yard of Sky.

While many might recall Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s eventual release in 2022 as a turning point, the series reveals her initial terror during her arrest at Tehran Airport. Portrayed by Narges Rashidi, Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s journey from fear to resilience underscores the psychological impact of her ordeal.

The series delves into Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s brutal reality, illustrating her life in solitary confinement, forced separation from her daughter, and the psychological torment of imprisonment. Despite the fear imposed upon her, Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s refusal to falsely confess reflects her resilience, reinforcing her enduring strength throughout her ordeal.

Lowthorpe acknowledged the distinct advantages of dramatization over documentary, aiming to “get under the skin of the characters in a deeply emotional way.” The show’s writing, described as subtly powerful, eschews didacticism, instead crafting an intimate portrayal of the distinct struggles faced by Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her family.

In a nuanced narrative, the series captures the humanity of both Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her husband, showcasing their life and dreams before her detention, as well as their painful separation. Richard Ratcliffe, portrayed by Joseph Fiennes, embodies the frustration felt by families of imprisoned individuals, documented by significant events, including his hunger strike to raise awareness of Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s plight.

They faced numerous challenges, including the British government’s alleged failure to intervene effectively while Iranian officials claimed that Zaghari-Ratcliffe was being held as leverage for outstanding debts owed to Iran. This backdrop frames the narrative’s urgency, especially following the 2022 decision by then-Prime Minister Liz Truss to authorize a payment that coincided with Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s release.

The chemistry between Rashidi and Fiennes, despite limited on-screen interaction, highlights their characters’ enduring bond. The show emphasizes not only the suffering experienced during imprisonment but also the tenderness of their earlier family life, using carefully curated moments to convey a sense of normalcy amidst their turmoil.

While the real-life Zaghari-Ratcliffe cannot return to her homeland or family, Prisoner 951 emphasizes the beauty of Iranian culture even amidst its painful loss. With attention to cultural authenticity, the production highlights both the warmth and the complexities of Iranian societal norms.

Lowthorpe and Rashidi hope that their portrayal will resonate with audiences, shedding light on the ongoing struggles of not just Zaghari-Ratcliffe but the broader Iranian diaspora facing similar traumas.

‘Prisoner 951’ continues on BBC One tonight at 9pm. All four episodes are available on BBC iPlayer.
