Michael Sheen opens Welsh National Theatre with ‘Our Town’
Michael Sheen’s new venture, the Welsh National Theatre (WNT), has officially launched with the inaugural production of Thornton Wilder’s classic play Our Town, reports BritPanorama.
The establishment of WNT follows the closure of National Theatre Wales in 2024 after it lost its Arts Council funding. Sheen, a proud advocate of Welsh culture, took on the role of artistic director, establishing the new company to ensure the continuity of theatre in Wales. The production debuted in Swansea before touring to Llandudno and Mold, and is currently stationed at the Rose Theatre in Kingston.
In Our Town, Sheen plays the Stage Manager, a role described as the “bearded and benevolent omniscient narrator.” The production emphasizes community and the complexities of everyday life, framed through a distinctly Welsh perspective. Directed by Francesca Goodridge, the performance features an all-Welsh cast, showcasing the region’s talent.
Sheen’s commitment to the project is notable, as he has invested a considerable amount of his personal finances into the venture. His connections within the entertainment industry, including collaborations with figures like David Tennant and Russell T Davies, who is serving as a “creative associate,” are poised to bolster the theatre’s growth.
The theatre’s second production, Owain and Henry, written by Gary Owen, is set for November at the Wales Millennium Centre and will focus on Owain Glyndwr’s historical revolt against King Henry IV.
However, a potential challenge for the sustainability of WNT emerges from Sheen needing to lead every production, which may become burdensome given his commitments to television. The hope is that early productions will generate enough momentum to empower a broader network of Welsh talent.
The aspiration for WNT extends beyond local audiences; its motto, “From Wales to the world,” reflects an ambition that could, in theory, lead to international collaborations, such as a joint project with the Royal Shakespeare Company led by Daniel Evans.
‘Our Town’ is at the Rose Theatre, Kingston-upon-Thames, until 28 March.
