Lorde confirms pop star status with Manchester arena show opener

Lorde opens UK arena tour in style

Lorde launched her first UK arena tour in a show characterized by personal triumph and artistic evolution. The concert, which marks the largest capacity performance she has staged in the UK, comes after a brief illness that led her to cancel a previous gig in Luxembourg. “The first night of this tour where I haven’t had active food poisoning,” she remarked, capturing the significance of the moment, reports BritPanorama.

The Auckland native’s latest album, June’s Virgin, explores themes of self-exploration and body image. Its cover features an X-ray of her pelvis with her IUD visible, reflecting a raw honesty that permeates her music. Lorde, now 29, has navigated various artistic phases since her debut with Pure Heroine, transitioning from a youthful sensation to a complex artist whose third album, Solar Power, received mixed critiques.

Tonight’s performance probes her evolution further. The choice of a spacious arena, a departure from her previous theatre tours, raises questions about how she would adapt to larger crowds. The answer: with style and confidence. Supported by a full live band arranged strategically behind her, Lorde dominated the stage, showcasing their collaboration without overshadowing her presence. Musically, Virgin pulsates with driving bass lines and compelling rhythms that resonate deeply with the audience.

Performances of “Hammer”, “Shapeshifter”, and “Broken Glass” set an engaging atmosphere filled with vibrant energy. Lorde successfully balances high-octane melodies with moments of intimate reflection. Early hits like “Royals” and “Supercut” intersperse with newer material, uniting themes of youth and liberation that reflect her artistic journey.

One standout moment comes during “Current Affairs”, where Lorde’s vulnerability shines through as she navigates emotional terrain with meticulous care. The performance pushes boundaries, blending traditional pop concert elements with artistic flourishes typically seen in performance art. In a particularly bold moment during “GRWM”, she performed clad in her underwear, emphasizing her commitment to authenticity.

Contrastingly, anthemic tracks such as “Team” and the euphoric “Green Light” provide a familiar pop appeal. The encore featured “Ribs”, which she described as her most “sacred” song, showcasing the emotional depth she penned at just 15 years old. The performance, a testament to her artistry and growth, underscores the complexity of her path to stardom.

Lorde continues her tour with an upcoming performance at the O2 Arena in London on 16 November, before proceeding with additional dates.
