Keira Knightley's latest Netflix thriller falls flat, threatening her comeback potential

Netflix’s ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ Criticized for Implausible Adaptation

Netflix’s latest thriller, based on Ruth Ware’s 2016 bestselling novel, has drawn sharp criticism for its unbelievable script and character portrayal. The film follows the story of a top journalist, Laura “Lo” Blacklock, played by Keira Knightley, who becomes embroiled in a mystery when she believes she sees a woman fall overboard from a yacht, reports BritPanorama.

In the original book, Lo is depicted as a struggling travel writer grappling with the aftermath of a violent robbery, which fuels her unreliable narrative. The adaptation, however, elevates her character to an award-winning investigative journalist, a choice that undermines the narrative tension and believability. This alteration prompts questions on how such a respected professional could be dismissed when reporting murder, challenging the film’s credibility.

While aboard a luxury yacht for a supposedly relaxing assignment, Lo interacts with an array of questionable characters, including billionaire Richard (Guy Pearce) and gallery head Heidi (Hannah Waddingham). Despite her assertions about the mysterious woman in cabin 10, her claims are persistently dismissed, leading to absurd plot developments that fail to engage viewers.

Lo’s characterization diverges sharply from the book, where her flaws and vulnerabilities make her a more relatable protagonist. Instead, the film presents a seemingly capable character that does not logically fit the narrative’s challenges, resulting in a disconnect that hampers viewer investment in her plight.

The screenplay, penned by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, falters significantly in its dialogue and character development. Characters frequently engage in unrealistic exchanges, diminishing the potential impact of the story. Knightley, a talented actress, navigates a frustrating role marked by inconsistent writing that oscillates between confidence and confusion.

Despite a talented cast, including notable performances from Pearce and Waddingham, the film struggles to rise above its contrived plot and superficial character interactions. The adaptation eliminates the source material’s clever pacing and nuanced storytelling, leaving audiences with diminished stakes and underdeveloped story arcs.

‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ is streaming on Netflix
