Jodie Whittaker shines in ITV's daring new female-led crime drama Frauds

Frauds, ITV’s latest crime drama, opens with a car traversing a dry, dusty expanse, reminiscent of iconic cinematic moments, reports BritPanorama. The narrative follows two friends, Suranne Jones and Jodie Whittaker, who are drawn into a treacherous life of crime in rural Spain.

This setting evokes a sense of desolation akin to the Western genre, characterized by washed-out colors and sweeping vistas. However, Frauds defies traditional expectations. It combines elements of humor and tension, showcasing a unique tone that challenges the perception of Sunday night ITV dramas.

Created by Jones and collaborator Anne-Marie O’Connor, the six-part series presents complex roles for women, enabling the actors to showcase their abilities meaningfully. This departure from the conventionally safe narratives offers something genuinely unexpected for the audience.

The premiere episode unfolds as a cat-and-mouse game, where the dynamics between the friends shift constantly. Whittaker’s character, Sam, takes the initiative by driving to a prison, where Jones’s Bert emerges, confidently interacting with the guards in Spanish.

Jones’s portrayal of Bert, characterized by a bleached haircut and tattoos, marks a significant shift from her previous roles. While this may seem unconvincing, her performance imbues the character with a compelling swagger.

As the plot develops, viewers learn that Bert has spent ten years incarcerated in Spain while Sam chose to remain distant. Flashbacks reveal their past criminal partnership, highlighting Sam’s guilt for leaving Bert behind. Their reunion stems from Bert’s recent cancer diagnosis, addressed with dark humor as she navigates her impending mortality.

Despite her bravado, Bert reveals a deep need for autonomy, leading Sam into a reckless scheme soon after her release. Their contrasting personalities emerge, with Sam initially hesitant and later rekindling her adventurous spirit alongside Bert.

The episode peaks at a dramatic confrontation in a bullring, where both characters engage in a fierce exchange, symbolizing their tumultuous relationship. This striking visual serves to amplify the show’s intensity.

With Bert covertly reconnecting with former associates, the prospect of a final heist looms large, setting an exhilarating stage for future episodes. Frauds promises to deliver thrilling developments as it unfolds.
