New Thriller ‘Lazarus’ Premieres on Prime Video
Prime Video has unveiled its latest thriller, Lazarus, featuring Sam Claflin as Joel “Laz” Lazarus, who investigates the mysterious death of his father, Dr. Jonathan Lazarus, played by Bill Nighy. The series delves into themes of trauma and grief, set against the backdrop of a fantastical narrative involving ghostly visitations, reports BritPanorama.
Following the apparent suicide of his father, Laz returns home to confront not only his father’s death but also the unresolved trauma of his twin sister Sutton’s murder, which occurred 25 years earlier. The complexities of family dynamics and unresolved grief unfold as Laz begins to experience supernatural occurrences, including visits from the spirits of his deceased father and other troubled souls.
With assistance from his friend Seth, played by David Fynn, who also works as a police officer, Laz embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind these spectral visits. The series expertly balances moments of levity with the unfolding mystery, allowing Seth’s character to provide comic relief while adding layers to Laz’s character through their interactions.
Lazarus distinguishes itself from previous Harlan Coben adaptations by maintaining a focused storyline rather than veering into numerous subplots. As buried secrets emerge and tensions rise, the narrative remains engaging, efficiently propelling the plot forward while revealing the identities of those behind the increasingly complex murders.
The character dynamics enhance the tension; as the investigation deepens, Laz’s past and present collide, leading to compelling revelations. Nighy’s casting adds gravitas to the role, amplifying the stakes of the narrative. Although the pacing occasionally falters, the series typically introduces timely plot twists that retain viewer interest through its six-episode run.
Despite its occasional dips into the “watchable but forgettable” territory, Lazarus remains a captivating entry in Coben’s oeuvre. It promises to leave a lasting impression without overstaying its welcome as a limited series. Available on Prime Video, it offers ample entertainment, though its memorability may be limited.
