Everything you need to remember before the final season of Stranger Things

The portals to the Upside Down are open, and Vecna is on the warpath. The long-awaited fifth season of **Stranger Things** is set to begin streaming on November 27, 2025, with significant developments in Hawkins, including military occupation and escalating upheaval as the characters prepare for an ultimate showdown with the series’ formidable villain, Vecna, reports BritPanorama.

Fans returning to Hawkins after a three-year hiatus must brace for both familiar and new challenges. The fifth season will be the last, with the initial four episodes released on November 27, followed by three more on Christmas Day and a two-hour finale on New Year’s Eve. The dramatic trailer features Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever” while showcasing the town under siege.

Vecna, introduced in season four as a deeply menacing force, exploits his victims’ fears and traumatic memories to incapacitate them. The stakes were raised dramatically when Vecna targeted Max, prompting Dustin, Steve, Robin, and Nancy to devise a plan to save her. This led to a climactic reveal of Vecna’s true identity as Henry Creel, whose transformation was initiated by Eleven during a past confrontation.

Vecna is still alive – and getting stronger

Season four established Vecna as a unique threat by opening portals between Hawkins and the Upside Down with each kill. This revelation set the stage for heightened conflict. Dustin’s innovative use of music, specifically Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” proved instrumental in combating Vecna’s grip over Max, allowing her a moment to break free. However, the season ended with foreboding implications as Will revealed a lingering connection to Vecna, indicating the monster’s return to power.

Eleven finally has her powers back

Stripped of her telekinetic abilities for much of the previous season, Eleven faced numerous challenges, including bullying at school and a confrontation resulting in her arrest. However, an intervention by Dr. Sam Owens facilitated her return to power through Project NINA, enabling her to confront Vecna once more during his attack on Max. This culminated in a tense battle of wills where Eleven managed to stabilize her friend, only to leave questions about Max’s fate as she lies in a coma.

The Russians are up to something (and Hopper kissed Joyce)

Last season’s storyline delved into Russia’s clandestine operations, particularly concerning Hopper, who was held captive and later rescued by Joyce and Murray. Their journey highlighted the ongoing threats posed by the Mind Flayer and the Russian government’s experiments. As the characters reunited in Hawkins, they faced new uncertainities regarding the implications of the Russian connection to Vecna’s hive mind.

Beyond the action, the romantic subplot between Hopper and Joyce reached a milestone, culminating in a kiss during their harrowing escape from Russia, setting a promising tone as they reconnect in Hawkins.

The portals to the Upside Down are open

With the completion of Vecna’s decisive act that opened the last remaining portal, the boundaries between Hawkins and the Upside Down are increasingly blurred. This convergence gives rise to the military’s stringent lockdown and illustrates the critical state of affairs facing Eleven and her friends. As the series progresses, anticipation builds for what promises to be a climactic confrontation with Vecna, signalling the end of their journey in Hawkins.

‘Stranger Things’ season five streams on Netflix from November 26, 2025.
