Elegant revival of Sondheim's Into the Woods showcases exceptional talent at Bridge Theatre

Kate Fleetwood and Jamie Parker lead revival of celebrated musical

The acclaimed 1987 musical Into the Woods has made its return to London with an elegant revival directed by Jordan Fein, featuring performances by Kate Fleetwood and Jamie Parker, reports BritPanorama.

This production brings to life the transformative experience depicted in classic tales where characters escape their mundane realities into a forest that offers both possibility and peril. The musical, which combines elements from various Brothers Grimm stories, involves a childless Baker (Parker) and his wife (Katie Brayben), who must confront a witch (Fleetwood) to lift a curse that obstructs their desire for a child.

The production showcases not only strong performances but also a high level of creative talent. The show opens exuberantly with a catchy refrain as various fairy tale characters, including Cinderella (Chumisa Dornford-May) and Little Red Riding Hood (Gracie McGonigal), traverse the narrative’s forest backdrop, designed by Tom Scutt.

The first act ends with wishes being granted, yet the dark second act, reflective of Sondheim’s signature style, explores the complexities of “happily ever after,” introducing a rampaging giant that adds layers to the plot.

While the production exudes a sophisticated coolness that may be more admirable than endearing, it is difficult to overlook the individual talents on display. Parker’s earnestness, Brayben’s spirited performance, and Dornford-May’s impressive vocal prowess contribute to a compelling experience. McGonigal’s portrayal of a naive character adeptly captures the essence of youthful curiosity. Fleetwood, revered for her dramatic roles, excels again, showcasing her vocal talents as the Witch, particularly in the powerful number “The Last Midnight.”

The show runs until 30 May at the Bridge Theatre in London. Tickets are available through the theatre’s website.
