Ed Gamble discusses new comedy show on turning 40 and pursuing passion projects

Ed Gamble reflects on turning 40 in new show

Ed Gamble has crafted a comedy show centered around the experience of turning 40, despite initially resisting the idea. “Everything within my being was like, when you turn 40, don’t write a show about being 40, because that’s what everyone does when they’re 40,” he remarked. “But I can’t stop thinking about it,” reports BritPanorama.

His new tour, titled Fresh Hell, set to begin next year, draws on the societal pressure to react dramatically as one approaches middle age. Gamble conveys that while this milestone is a common source of stress for many, he remains relatively unbothered and is carrying on with his life. He continues to host the successful food podcast Off Menu alongside James Acaster and tour the US with his previous stand-up show Hot Diggity Dog.

At 40, Gamble asserts that the anticipated crisis has not materialised. “I think a lot of people see 40 or 50 looming and they think, well, something’s gonna happen, something’s gonna change,” he stated. “And when I woke up and it was my 40th, I was like, well, I was 39 yesterday. That was about eight hours ago. So it can’t be that different.”

In a relaxed setting during a conversation from his home in London, Gamble exudes comfort. As a well-known figure in comedy, notably as a winner on Taskmaster and a beloved performer, he has found his niche within the entertainment landscape. His marriage to TV producer Charlie Jamison and his youthful appearance further add to his aura of stability.

Gamble’s comedy, which began during his time at Durham University, has evolved into sharp observations on the peculiarities of middle-class life. His routines often examine everyday scenarios, such as neighborhood WhatsApp groups and odd hospital visits. Despite this, he maintains a light-hearted approach devoid of darker themes.

“I think that’s more about how I like to portray myself,” he explained. “I just want to make people laugh and it’s not about my darkness. I genuinely don’t think I have any.” This stance marks a departure from the trend in contemporary comedy that often delves into personal struggles.

His performances aim to foster a lively environment, ensuring audience enjoyment is a central goal. “My absolute deepest fear is someone coming out of the show and they’ve had a horrible time,” he admitted. While he values the audience’s experience, he acknowledges the emotional toll it can take if even one individual doesn’t enjoy the show.

Gamble continues to expand his portfolio with projects, revealing that the ongoing success of Off Menu provides him the freedom to pursue various interests, including a potential horror novel and acting opportunities. “I’m in a position now where I can just do what I enjoy, which is a hugely privileged position,” he observed.

When asked about his prospective participation in the next series of The Celebrity Traitors, he lightheartedly expressed his concern about maintaining his role as a podcast host while potentially competing in the show. This reflects his continued engagement with various facets of entertainment.

As he looks ahead, Gamble remains optimistic about future projects and the evolving dynamics of his industry. “Every series, the production will find a new twist on things and then people will react in different ways. I’m buzzing for this year,” he concluded.

Amidst the transition into his 40s, Gamble emphasizes the blend of looking back and forward, finding joy in the duality of life’s moments that shape his career and comedic outlook.

Ed Gamble’s Fresh Hell tour begins on 31 January 2027 in Birmingham. Tickets are released 27 March.
