Attenborough showcases British wildlife in new series

David Attenborough’s latest series, titled Secret Garden, brings attention to the wealth of British wildlife found in domestic gardens, shifting focus from his extensive travels around the globe, reports BritPanorama.

The series opens with a stunning riverside home in Oxfordshire, featuring its inhabitants, Henry and Sarah, who become secondary to the vibrant wildlife their garden attracts. Notably, a female mallard named Doris captures attention, quacking loudly and frequently visiting the garden.

Filmed in close-up and slow-motion, the series presents Doris’s life as a mother of nine ducklings, illustrating her challenges in navigating potential threats like male ducks, hungry otters, and avian predators such as red kites.

Alongside Doris, the series highlights various British wildlife including a family of voles hunted by grass snakes, a resilient kingfisher facing rising water levels that could flood its burrow, and mayflies whose lifecycle sustains the local ecosystem. The environmental themes persist, with Attenborough commending Henry and Sarah for allowing their garden to grow wild, underlining the narratives of survival occurring within everyday encounters.

This focus marks only the second time in recent years that Attenborough has centred his work on the UK, following his notable documentary Wild London. His shift to exploring the familiar landscapes serves as a reminder of the beauty found in ordinary settings, promoting the importance of local nature.

While the decision to focus on British wildlife could stem from various factors including potential BBC budget cuts or Attenborough’s advancing age—he turns 100 in May—it reinforces a significant message: the remarkable natural world exists around us, often unnoticed.

‘Secret Garden’ is on BBC One on Sundays at 6pm
