Mulberry appoints Christopher Kane as creative director ahead of London Fashion Week debut

Christopher Kane appointed as Mulberry’s new creative director

Somerset-headquartered luxury handbag maker Mulberry has announced that Scottish designer Christopher Kane will take on the role of creative director, responsible for relaunching the brand’s women’s ready-to-wear collection, with the debut expected to take place at London Fashion Week in September, reports BritPanorama.

Kane, a notable figure in the fashion industry, has been praised following his appointment. Vogue noted that his absence from the fashion scene since closing his eponymous brand in 2023 was an “almost criminal oversight” of his talent.

Mulberry stated that Kane’s appointment represents a significant step in its recovery strategy, initially launched last year in response to declining sales. The brand aims to rejuvenate its market presence and enhance consumer interest through this partnership.

With a background featuring work for Donatella Versace, Kane boasts prominent support from high-profile fans, including Rihanna and Michelle Obama. A graduate of Central Saint Martins and a recipient of the Vogue Fashion Fund as well as four British Fashion Awards, including Womenswear Designer of the Year, Kane brings significant experience to Mulberry.

Kane launched his label alongside his sister Tammy in 2006, with French multinational Kering acquiring a 51 per cent stake in 2013. However, he later regained control of the label before it closed due to the pressures of the pandemic.

This return to London Fashion Week marks Mulberry’s first catwalk show in nearly ten years. According to the heritage brand, Kane’s collection will be available in stores and online starting January 2027.

“Welcoming Christopher marks an important moment for Mulberry as we open a new chapter for ready-to-wear,” said Andrea Baldo, chief executive of Mulberry. “Christopher brings a rare combination of creativity, intellectual rigour and instinctive playfulness, alongside a deep respect for craft and materials.”

Baldo added, “His vision resonates strongly with Mulberry’s heritage and the spirit of British creativity that defines the house. Together we look forward to evolving Mulberry’s creative language beyond accessories and shaping a compelling future for ready-to-wear on a global stage.”

Kane commented, “It is an honour to join Mulberry, a brand with such a rich British heritage and a deep commitment to craft. I look forward to working closely with Andrea and the team to create a new chapter of ready-to-wear that celebrates the spirit of Mulberry.”

Earlier this year, Mulberry reported strong sales figures for the Christmas trading period, indicating that its transformation plan may be taking effect.

This appointment signifies a potential turning point for Mulberry, as it seeks to reinvigorate its brand identity amidst a competitive market. Kane’s established reputation and creative vision may provide the impetus needed for a successful relaunch. The impact of this leadership change will likely be closely monitored as the fashion house attempts to regain its prominence on a global stage.
