Wes Streeting defends government emergency preparedness plan amid audience concerns on scaremongering

UK government urges public to prepare for emergencies

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has defended the government’s campaign advocating for public readiness in case of emergencies, citing a need for vigilance in uncertain times, reports BritPanorama.

During an appearance on BBC Question Time, Streeting emphasized the importance of being “alert but not alarmed.” He noted that while there is no specific threat prompting this advice, it could be beneficial during incidents such as power cuts or potential cyberattacks on local businesses.

When questioned by an audience member about the risk of “scaremongering” leading to panic buying, reminiscent of the Covid-19 pandemic, Streeting reassured that the intention was to foster a mindset of preparedness without inciting alarm. He acknowledged the ongoing discussions within the government regarding this issue, adding that it was essential to compare the UK’s readiness with that of other European nations.

Streeting stated, “They are way ahead of us on some of this stuff. So actually, my reaction as Defence Secretary wasn’t, ‘Is this the right thing to do?’ It’s ‘why haven’t we done this before, and why are we playing catch up compared to lots of other European countries?’” His remarks reflect a broader strategy aiming to enhance the UK’s emergency preparedness, aligning with practices observed throughout Europe.

This initiative highlights a growing recognition of the need for public awareness and readiness regarding possible crises, potentially paving the way for future policy adjustments in line with European standards.
