Robert Jenrick claims Nigel Farage has significantly addressed racism and far-right extremism

Nigel Farage has been defended by his party colleague Robert Jenrick, who claims that Farage has done more to combat racism and the far-right than “almost anybody,” amid mounting allegations of sexism and racism against Reform UK, reports BritPanorama.

This assertion was made as Reform’s Treasury spokesperson sought to mitigate the fallout from a recent undercover sting operation revealing that some councillors and candidates within Reform UK had employed racist language. The footage also depicted Farage seemingly allowing a mayoral candidate accused of racism to remain in the party.

In response to questions about the ITV documentary, Jenrick remarked on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, “I didn’t like what I heard in the documentary or what I’ve seen in it. The party has acted immediately.” He emphasized, “We have and will never have any place for racism or comments of that kind in Reform,” detailing the swift action taken against individuals implicated, including Solihull councillor Feeney.

Despite Jenrick’s reassurances, Labour described remarks made by Chris Parry, the party’s mayoral candidate for Hampshire and the Solent, as “racist and grossly offensive.” Parry had previously suggested that then-Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy should “go home to the Caribbean” in a social media post. The footage captured a conversation where Farage advised the candidate to issue an apology, indicating a desire to manage the situation internally.

Jenrick further dismissed claims of persistent racial issues within Reform, stating, “I don’t accept that this happens any more in Reform than any other party,” while expressing disbelief at the depth of media scrutiny directed at Farage, who is often labeled the most heavily scrutinised figure in British politics. He argued that Farage has significantly contributed to fighting racism throughout his political career.

Despite the defense from Jenrick, Farage has faced criticism throughout his career for incendiary remarks. In 2016, he was reported to the police due to an anti-migrant poster that critics claimed incited racial hatred. Additionally, recent comments made by Scottish First Minister John Swinney regarding Farage’s views on Glasgow schoolchildren were termed “simply racist,” highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding his public persona.

Moreover, the undercover footage has revealed a culture within Reform UK described as exclusionary towards women, exemplified by comments from Runcorn and Helsby MP Sarah Pochin, who voiced her frustrations regarding the party’s environment. She lamented the dominance of “alpha male” dynamics, suggesting that female voices are often sidelined.

As such controversies continue to swirl around Farage and Reform UK, the party seeks to redefine its messaging amid challenging narratives. The implications of these latest allegations may prove pivotal as the political landscape evolves in the coming months.

The ongoing scrutiny highlights the complexities within political parties navigating accusations of discrimination while striving for broader public appeal.
