Manchester City appeals findings in Premier League financial case
Manchester City have formally appealed against the independent commission’s findings in the Premier League’s financial case, confirming they lodged their challenge at 7pm on Thursday, reports BritPanorama.
The club argues that the commission’s opinion contains “clear material errors” of law, principle, and fact, rendering it “unsafe.” City continues to assert its innocence regarding the Premier League’s accusations.
This appeal marks the next stage in a case that has loomed over the eight-time champions. An independent commission found City guilty of serious breaches of financial rules spanning nine seasons, though a sanction has yet to be announced.
City stated: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026, the Club lodged its comprehensive appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter. The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle, and fact and is unsafe.”
The appeal follows a commission ruling on allegations involving the club from the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons, concluding that City had breached financial regulations by employing sponsorship arrangements described as “a disguised funding scheme.” The commission indicated that City recorded nearly £950 million in sponsorship revenue from Abu Dhabi-based entities, with about £830 million of that funding traced back to the Abu Dhabi United Group, which owns the club.
City maintain they have substantial evidence to support their position, contrary to the commission’s findings. Their appeal will be evaluated by a separate Appeal Board according to Premier League rules, with hearings expected within 12 weeks of lodging the appeal.
The Premier League has indicated that sanctions will be considered in a subsequent hearing, but no sporting penalties have been announced as of yet. Meanwhile, the Football Association is monitoring the situation and will take relevant actions if necessary based on the commission’s decision and its implications.
This development underscores the ongoing complexities and challenges faced by clubs in navigating the financial regulatory landscape, illustrating how controversies surrounding football finance can ripple through the sport’s governance structures.
