Jim Ratcliffe’s UK claim faces backlash from Labour
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been criticised by Labour for asserting that the UK is “on the slide”, reports BritPanorama.
The billionaire attributed the nation’s decline to excessive taxation, uncontrolled immigration, and a rising welfare bill.
Ratcliffe, who lives in Monaco, cautioned that high taxes could drive wealthy individuals to relocate, stating, “If you tax everybody to death, they’re all going to leave.” Treasury minister Torsten Bell responded by accusing Ratcliffe of “hating his own country.”
Labour’s chair, Bridget Phillipson, further criticised Ratcliffe’s standing to comment on the economy, suggesting that his status as a tax exile diminishes his argument. “You lose the moral high ground in the argument you make, Jim Ratcliffe, that is, by making these kinds of pronouncements while choosing to make decisions, that he is within his rights to make, to become a tax exile,” she remarked, also noting Ratcliffe’s previous support for Brexit.
In his comments, Ratcliffe condemned politicians for their inaction regarding immigration and welfare. He stated, “Nobody’s tough enough to deal with the immigration problem. Nobody’s tough enough to deal with the benefits problem. But somebody needs to do it.”
This is not the first instance where Ratcliffe has faced backlash for his remarks. In February, he claimed the UK had been “colonised” by migrants in connection with the welfare system. Ratcliffe later apologised for any offence caused by his language.
His latest comments were made while attending the launch of the EU’s first carbon capture and storage system in Denmark, where he also expressed his views on Britain’s energy policy. He described the lack of support for further North Sea drilling as “insane” and warned of potential gas supply issues during cold winter months.
Ratcliffe emphasised the importance of utilising natural resources, saying, “You would expect the Government to exploit our natural resources and we’re clearly not doing that. We’re shutting it down.” In response, the Government asserted that Britain maintains a secure and diverse energy supply, aiming for a transition to homegrown clean energy.
