Bianca Westwood acknowledges the end of her football career
Bianca Westwood has revealed that she will likely never work in football again, as she observed opportunities dwindling during the final stages of her 22-year tenure with Sky Sports, reports BritPanorama.
The 51-year-old became the first female reporter to feature on Soccer Saturday, garnering recognition as a familiar presence in football broadcasting before accepting redundancy in 2023. Westwood later shifted her focus away from sports to produce content aimed primarily at women, covering topics such as fashion, skincare, and grief, particularly after the recent loss of her mother.
Addressing her 46,500 TikTok followers, Westwood confirmed she does not anticipate returning to Sky Sports or resuming her career in football, despite ongoing inquiries about a possible comeback. “I wanted to set a few things straight because I still get a lot of messages asking about Sky,” she said.
In her statement, she remarked, “The compliments are really nice, I do appreciate them, but I’m not going back to Sky.” Reflecting on her past experiences, she noted, “It’s funny because I get so many compliments now about what a good reporter I was, which is lovely… and yet when I was doing it, especially when I first started, everyone said I was s**t.”
Westwood expressed feeling undervalued by the broadcaster towards the end of her time there, stating, “I had a feeling, probably about a year before I left Sky that the opportunities were becoming few and far between; they didn’t really rate me.” This led to her decision to explore other interests, including fashion and skincare.
She accepted redundancy coinciding with the departure of long-time Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling. Despite searching for new roles in football, Westwood found nothing appealing enough to draw her back into the industry and mentioned a declining access to Premier League players as a factor. “When I first started reporting, you could go out, take players to different locations for interviews… But now you literally get shoved into a room,” she observed, highlighting a stark change in the nature of football journalism.
Westwood admitted her enthusiasm for the sport had diminished significantly, partly due to the inadequate opportunities for genuine interaction with players. “The player half the time doesn’t want to be there, he’s answering the same question; it just didn’t feel the same to me,” she explained, concluding that football no longer holds her interest. Although she remains open to exceptional offers, she made it clear that her future lies elsewhere.
In a statement encapsulating her views, she added, “But football is done… unless a really, really good exciting, challenging job came up,” cautioning, “But I’m not holding my breath.”
