MPs are set to vote on the UK’s assisted dying bill as it returns to Parliament on Friday (11 September), reports BritPanorama. The Bill aims to permit terminally ill adults with less than six months to live the right to end their lives, contingent upon the approval of a panel of experts.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced he will abstain from voting on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill to avoid influencing the debate unduly.
Dame Esther Rantzen, founder of Childline and a former broadcaster, has reiterated her support for the law’s change. In contrast, actor Liz Carr and other campaigners are urging MPs to reject the Bill, expressing concerns over safeguarding issues.
Although the Bill has successfully passed two votes in the Commons, it faced delays in the Lords, where it ran out of time in April. Supporters criticized some peers for tabling numerous amendments, effectively stalling the legislation and calling it a “denial of democracy.”
Lauren Edwards, the MP who has reintroduced the Bill after taking over from Kim Leadbeater, has urged her fellow MPs to return the Bill to the Lords “so that they can finish what they started” in reviewing the legislation. She characterized the ongoing debate as “one of the most significant national conversations we have had.”
If approved by MPs on Friday, the Bill will undergo further debate, potential amendments, and another vote at the Third Reading before advancing to the Lords for scrutiny and a return to the Commons.
