Frustration leads to stunning incident at English Open
Elliot Slessor stunned snooker fans by biting the tip off his cue after suffering a dramatic first-round defeat at the English Open, reports BritPanorama.
The world No 21 experienced a turbulent match against Ashley Hugill, ranked 101 places below him. Slessor had initially led the contest 2-1 but ultimately succumbed to a tense 4-3 loss in Brentwood.
In the deciding frame, with Hugill poised to negotiate the final two colours, Slessor missed a crucial snooker that could have kept his hopes alive. His immediate reaction reflected the weight of his disappointment.
The 32-year-old player, realising his campaign was effectively over, struck his cue against the floor with such force that it caused a loud crack audible from the main table, interrupting another match nearby. He then bizarrely began chewing the tip of his cue before appearing to fully bite it off.
After taking a moment to regain his composure, Slessor conceded defeat and extended his hand to Hugill. The incident, broadcast live, drew criticism from former world No 1 Neal Foulds, who remarked, “It is not a good look, I’m afraid. He may think it was good at the time, but when he looks back he won’t enjoy seeing it.”
This defeat marked a significant opportunity lost for Slessor, who had previously established a slight lead. Hugill, undeterred by his lower ranking, mounted a comeback before completing one of the tournament’s unexpected upsets.
Hugill’s victory sets up a match against Chinese snooker icon Ding Junhui, who secured his second-round position with a win over Michael Holt. The English Open has proven challenging for several prominent players, with two former world champions exiting at the first hurdle.
Reigning Crucible champion Zhao Xintong also experienced an early exit, losing 4-2 to Oliver Lines, while former champion Neil Robertson was edged out 4-3 by Luo Zetao in another thrilling encounter.
This sequence of events serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of snooker, where emotions often run high and even the most seasoned professionals can find themselves in the grips of frustration.
