Harry Kane aims for Ballon d’Or after record-breaking season
Harry Kane has shared his thoughts about the likelihood of winning the Ballon d’Or, having had his “best season so far”, reports BritPanorama.
The England captain is the bookmakers’ favourite to claim the acclaimed prize, after netting a staggering 73 goals for club and country in his last campaign. Only Lionel Messi’s 82 in the 2011/12 season betters the Englishman’s total from last season.
Kane’s achievements also include winning the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, alongside securing a third-place finish in the World Cup with England.
“I’m extremely proud of the season I put up, for sure,” Kane told TNT Sports. “Not that long ago, I was that fan wanting to become a professional footballer, and I am here now and winning awards, and the Ballon d’Or is the same.”
He added, “Of course, now it is out of my hands; it is down to the voters and the people who decide it. The season I had was my best season by far, and we’ll have to wait and see.” A potential win would make Kane only the fifth English player to receive the honour, following Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, and Michael Owen.
Despite his high profile this season, Kane remains focused on continual improvement. “It is a weird one because I am already focused on this season now and the next season. Can I be better? Can I improve? But I also want to appreciate what I did,” he commented.
Kane remarked on the nature of football opinion, saying, “The thing with football opinions – there are so many opinions, so many arguments for different players and people love this player because he’s fast and he’s got great IQ and his finishing is great.” He expressed his happiness at being in contention for the Ballon d’Or, underscoring the debates such awards generate.
After surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of 69 goals from the 2011/12 season, Kane reflected on the elite level of performance exhibited by Messi and Ronaldo, stating, “They are the two greatest of our generation and arguably of all time. So 73 goals, even for me, I am pretty amazed by that.”
However, Kane is yet to find the net for Bayern Munich this season, having drawn blanks in their opening two games against Stuttgart and Schalke. He aims to start his scoring run on September 10 against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League, as Bayern seeks to reclaim their dominance in European football.
