Hamilton eyes historic victory at Monza
Lewis Hamilton has been reflecting deeply on the historic weight of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, where victory would see him become the first black driver ever to win at Monza in a Ferrari, reports BritPanorama.
The seven-time world champion, who arrived at the circuit in a rare Ferrari F40, acknowledged the enormity of what lies ahead. “I’ve really thought coming into this weekend, as I pondered, just thinking of the sheer magnitude of the concept that I’m coming to this Grand Prix,” he said, adding that he had not even realised he was level with Michael Schumacher on five victories at the famous circuit.
“The thought that there’s a first ahead of me, in the sense that potentially, if I was to win, you go into new territory,” Hamilton remarked. He described the prospect of achieving such a milestone as “phenomenal.”
Hamilton’s pursuit of an eighth world title remains very much alive, though he faces a considerable deficit to Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli in the standings. The Briton sits 59 points behind the young Italian with 11 races still to run this season. His Barcelona triumph in June — his maiden grand prix victory in Ferrari colours — has kept him firmly in the hunt.
This weekend, however, presents a particular opportunity. Antonelli will be forced to begin Sunday’s race from the rear of the grid, having incurred a penalty for using more engine components than regulations permit. That grid demotion for his chief rival hands Hamilton a significant advantage at a track where he has already tasted success on five previous occasions, matching the great Schumacher’s tally at the Temple of Speed.
Ferrari’s prospects at Monza have been further enhanced by the introduction of their second power unit upgrade of the 2026 campaign. The Maranello outfit confirmed on Wednesday that they had utilised the latter of two permitted engine development windows this season. A relative lack of straight-line power compared with Mercedes — who also supply McLaren — has arguably been Ferrari’s most notable shortcoming throughout the year.
Hamilton acknowledged the deficit candidly. “Even in the last race on such a short circuit we were losing four tenths a lap through the race. That’s a huge deficit,” he said. He praised the renewed sense of direction within the team. “I see a different focus this year to last year. Last year, I felt like there wasn’t really a north star,” he explained. “Now we have a north star, and we know where we need to work towards.”
The upgrade, Hamilton conceded, would not eliminate the entire gap to their rivals. “This is a step forward, it’s not the whole gap that we need but we knew that would be the case,” he said.
Hamilton also revealed that his mother would be in attendance at Monza this weekend — a first for her at the Italian venue, and particularly special given the Ferrari occasion. “I wanted her to experience that and you know bring any of the lucky dust she can bring,” he said. The pressure to perform in front of the passionate Tifosi is something Hamilton clearly relishes. He spoke of the factory workers who would travel to the race and the unrivalled fervour of Ferrari’s devoted supporters.
“The pressure is high. You also want to deliver for the team,” he said. “The Tifosi, who come in huge numbers and the passion is unmatched, and you want to deliver for them as well.”
Despite the points deficit, Hamilton remains resolute in his conviction that the championship is not beyond reach. “I strongly still believe that we’ve got what it takes to win,” he declared.
