Lewis Hamilton assesses Ferrari’s upgrades ahead of Italian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton has provided his assessment of Ferrari’s upgrades in the lead-up to the Italian Grand Prix, expressing optimism about the potential improvements. The seven-time world champion is competing at Monza this weekend and hopes that the changes made by Ferrari will facilitate a stronger performance, reports BritPanorama.
Ferrari has enhanced their engine for both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc following two development opportunities granted by the FIA. Hamilton acknowledged these upgrades, stating, “Every little helps. Until this point of the year, even last race, we were losing 0.4 seconds a lap (on the straights). We have carried that deficit.”
He emphasized that while the upgrades are a positive step, they do not fully bridge the gap to their competitors. “This is a step forward. It is not the whole amount we need, but we knew that was the case. I strongly believe we have what it takes to win,” he remarked, highlighting the necessity for the team to work synchronously for success.
Ferrari’s performance at Monza last year was lackluster, finishing fourth and sixth. Hamilton’s desire to win at this historic circuit is palpable: “There is a first ahead of me, in the sense of if I was to win I go into new territory (of) winning for the first time in Ferrari at Monza. It would be phenomenal.”
The pressure on the team is substantial as they aim to appease the passionate tifosi, with Hamilton reflecting, “Many of them will come to this race. The tifosi come out in huge numbers with a passion that’s unmatched.” Additionally, he mentioned his mother’s presence at the race, hoping her attendance would bring some luck.
In a twist, Kimi Antonelli, currently leading the drivers’ championship, will start from the back of the grid due to a penalty, offering a potentially advantageous situation for Ferrari. Hamilton noted, “Kimi will start from the back but with the power he has, and the performance he has, he should slide through that pack pretty easy.” He believes attaining a solid position will be within reach, demanding a focus on maximizing their potential during the race weekend.
Looking ahead, Hamilton recognized the competitiveness of the track. “I think this track can be very good for us, but we have to take into account that McLaren, Ferrari, even Red Bull can be good this weekend,” he stated. His analysis underscores the unpredictable nature of the Monza circuit, where energy management will be critical for performance.
