Zack Polanski confirms candidacy for Keir Starmer’s parliamentary seat following by-election announcement

Zack Polanski has confirmed he will run for Keir Starmer’s seat following the former Prime Minister’s resignation, which has triggered a by-election in London, reports BritPanorama.

The Green Party leader, currently a member of the London Assembly, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to represent Holborn and St Pancras in Parliament.

This announcement comes after Sir Keir Starmer declared his intention to quit as an MP earlier this week. Polanski stated he is eager to contest the seat, emphasizing that the area “represents so many of the things that make London so special.”

Polanski told Camden New Journal, “Holborn and St Pancras has everything that’s the best of our country and so much potential.” He further added, “We know that the Greens can win here, and by electing me, voters will have someone who will always fight their corner – never scared of big donors or the party whip.”

Polanski criticized Labour for prioritizing corporate interests over those of everyday citizens, asserting he aims to advocate for people struggling to afford their bills.

No date has been set for the by-election, and Polanski must be formally selected by local Green Party members. This contest is anticipated to be competitive as the Green Party seeks to reduce Labour’s support in the capital.

Earlier this year, the Greens placed second in the area during local elections but face challenges from within the party regarding candidate preferences.

Sir Keir Starmer stated it was “the right time” to leave Parliament after 11 years of representing the constituency. The former Prime Minister, who departed Downing Street at the end of July, intends to focus on a new career in international affairs, including defense, security, trade, and technology, while continuing his advocacy against violence towards women and girls.

Starmer has already notified his local Labour constituency party, which is now beginning the process of selecting his successor.

The forthcoming by-election highlights the shifting political landscape in London, reflecting both the aspirations of the Green Party and potential vulnerabilities within the Labour stronghold.
