Nato fighter jets were scrambled in eastern Europe early on Tuesday, as Russia launched a fresh aerial attack on Ukraine that killed at least nine people in the Kyiv region, reports BritPanorama.
The alliance’s Baltic air policing mission confirmed its response, while Finland and Latvia restricted air and maritime traffic near their borders as the attack unfolded.
Russian air strikes also impacted border crossings into Romania, targeting Ukraine’s Izmail region. The latest assault involved both missiles and drones, resulting in injuries to over a dozen individuals in Ukraine.
In a response action, Kyiv aimed at Moscow, where mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that more than a dozen drones were intercepted on their way to the Russian capital.
In the northwestern Leningrad region, officials indicated that Russian air forces engaged drones, underscoring an ongoing response to aerial threats.
This development follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement about having a “detailed and constructive” call with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, arranging a visit to Kyiv for peace talks.
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed their forces struck military and energy sites in Kyiv and Odesa, alongside surrounding regions; however, these assertions have not been independently verified. Casualty reports from Ukrainian officials included fatalities among women and children during the overnight strikes, with eight people killed and others injured in Kyiv.
